Top Nonprofit Hashtags of 2023

In today’s digitally connected world, hashtags have become more than just a trend. They can act as a tool to amplify the impact of nonprofits on social media platforms.

Nonprofits can add hashtags to their social media strategies as a way to enhance their visibility, expand reach, and engage with a wider and more diverse audience.

Hashtags categorize social media posts, making it easier for users to discover and connect with causes they care about.

By utilizing relevant and popular hashtags, nonprofits can tap into ongoing conversations and trends and increase the likelihood of their content being seen and shared.

A few things to remember about nonprofit hashtags

Before you go adding 50 new hashtags to all of your social media posts, there are a few things you should take into account:

  • To utilize hashtags, your social media account must be public.
  • More is not always better. Limit the amount the amount to 5 to 10 per post. If you add too many, it can come across as spammy.
  • While using already created hashtags is helpful, you should also make your own unique ones for your organization or fundraising event.
  • Don’t always pick the top hashtags. If you consistently only add hashtags that are used over a million times, there is a good chance that your post will get buried and not easily seen. Use a mix of top nonprofit hashtags and some that are more specific and used under 100k times.

5 Lessons from 5 Years as an Executive Director

5 Lessons and Tips for an Executive Director

I have led both a nonprofit and a state agency during stormy times. During my tenure as executive director, one of my greatest joys was pulling everyone together as a team to create an extraordinary sense of connection. In those moments, the barriers between the board, executive leaders, front-line staffers, and behind-the-scenes workers became irrelevant—we were all in it together. The challenges that inevitably come with working at a nonprofit became opportunities to draw powerful takeaways. Crisis creates connections.”

– A message from this guide’s author, Janet Sharkis

This short, how-to guide will provide you with five ideas on improving as an executive director and using technology to your advantage. Some lessons come with time, and Janet shares her experience with us to help you gain some additional insights.

In this guide, you will get tips for an executive director and learn about the following:

  • How do you encourage out-of-the-box thinking with your team
  • The importance of making data-driven decisions within your organization
  • Ways you can embrace each other’s strengths
  • Why you should keep your community and partners engaged
  • And why you should also enjoy the journey!

Create Reports Funders Want to See

How to create a nonprofit report that funders want to see

Want to learn how to create a nonprofit report to boost donor trust? You can use this guide to identify what funders use to make decisions.

Connecting a nonprofit’s impact to its reporting provides steps for measuring program outcomes. Defining objectives and focusing on quantitative measurements is essential to improve nonprofit reporting processes. Next, data should be collected, and caseworkers should understand the larger picture. The data can then be analyzed to develop outcomes that show the nonprofit’s impact. Finally, outcomes should be shared with internal and external stakeholders to showcase the nonprofit’s work and boost fundraising and engagement.

Based on survey responses from 440 funders, the guide explains how nonprofits can improve their reporting to appeal to more funders.

Nonprofits must develop comprehensive, data-driven reports demonstrating their impact and aligning with funders’ decision-making factors to secure funding. Funders’ decision-making is primarily driven by how nonprofits develop and create reports, and the guide stresses the need to report to stakeholders. It identifies different types of reports nonprofits can create and emphasizes the importance of efficient reporting to generate more funding, especially with staffing shortages.

Here is what you will receive in this guide :

  • How to create a nonprofit report
  • Examples of reports that nonprofits use to tell their story
  • How to connect your nonprofit’s impact to reporting
  • Four steps to keep in mind when measuring your outcomes
  • and more!

7 Steps to Compelling Staff Bios on Your Nonprofit Website

If you’ve spent any time in the world of nonprofit copywriting, you’ll have heard the maxim: people give to people, not causes. We like people. We care about real people because they remind us of those we love and care about. However, many nonprofits forget that the same applies to our own organizations as well, not just our fundraising materials. We’re in the relationship business. Major gifts fundraisers—how much time do you spend getting to know your donors? Then it makes sense to let your donors get to know you too! Here’s why you should include staff bios on your website.

Think Globally, Act Locally with SDGs

You don’t need one more acronym, right? We hear you. The nonprofit sector is riddled with abbreviations of ways to do more good. LOI, DAF, and even NPO. That said, there is one more acronym that we should all be aware of SDG, or in other words, Sustainable Development Goals. These seventeen goals are agreed upon by the United Nations as initiatives to complete by the year 2030, and much of the world is on board. They address everything from poverty to gender equality and have the potential to change the world…as do you. In this episode, Katie talks with Kim Fuller of Phil. Kim’s agency specializes in helping charities gain support, traction, and impact while pursuing alignment with the SDGs.

2023 Nonprofit Trends You Need to Know

Trends come and go. But staying on top of new trends will give your organization opportunities to grow. So, we dug into all aspects of the nonprofit sector. This article will provide insights into everything from tech to team building. Some of these 2023 nonprofit trends may not be a surprise to you. But others may make you reconsider your plan for the upcoming year.

Read on to learn more about what to expect in the upcoming year.

 Taking Advantage of LinkedIn

The first 2023 nonprofit trend to watch is LinkedIn. LinkedIn will become the social platform for nonprofits and nonprofit pros to utilize. LinkedIn presents a unique opportunity to shed light on your nonprofit’s mission and build your professional network.

The platform has roughly 300 million active users each month. But here’s the kicker – only 1% of those users are posting. Only 3 million users share content weekly on LinkedIn. If you build up your profile and highlight your nonprofit in your posts, there are good chances it will be seen and shared. You won’t compete with as many user posts. Your content may reach the audiences you want. Aren’t you sure where to start? No worries – the Nonprofit Hub team talked to LinkedIn marketing pro Anthony Jones and discussed ways you can utilize the platform.

The rise of “donate now, pay later” fundraising platforms.

So what is a “donate now, pay later” fundraising platform? It’s just as simple as it sounds. Donors can donate and pay for their gift over time or later, while the nonprofit receives it upfront.

BGenerous gives “donors the convenience of paying over time, but nonprofits get the money upfront, making the donor process much less stressful on everybody.”

Givezy is also a similar platform. They “allow donors to split their payments over time so they can make a more significant gift today” and other flexible options.

Companies like BGenerous and Givezy are innovating how donors can give to nonprofits. Consider utilizing their software to change up your fundraising plan in 2023.

The importance of internal team building and professional development

It’s no secret that there’s a shortage in the workforce. Nonprofits see a revolving door of employees coming and going. More and more organizations feel the repercussions of short staff. Nonprofits should look forward to finding ways to retain their staff. There will be an increased focus on internal team building and how to keep employees over a longer term.

Nonprofits will also be more likely to invest in their long-term employees or those who wish to grow with their mission. Providing professional development for staff members will showcase the organization’s investment in their team. When the professional grows, the nonprofit can grow. Consider signing your team up for nonprofit conferences, courses, or other continuing education.

Continuing with a flexible work environment

One trend we’re sure to see keep up in the flexible work environment established in response to the pandemic. Nonprofits organizations will continue to see remote job opportunities. In addition, some organizations are implementing 4-day workweeks in the summertime. It’s easy to get burnt out in the nonprofit sector, and having a flexible schedule and work environment can help address that issue.

Working smarter, not more complicated, by implementing technology

At Nonprofit Hub, we use technology to create automations, schedule content, and track engagement. Tech is our best friend. Technology can be your best friend, too. With a small staff and turnover, implementing tech to work for you is essential to saving time and money. In 2023, more organizations will turn to tech to help with the workload. With fundraising platforms that can help identify donor trends and CRMs to schedule and plan your subsequent campaigns, nonprofits will increase their focus on trying out new technologies. Looking for trusted tech businesses to partner with? Check out our Good Referral resource directory!

 Increased focus on donor retention

Another 2023 nonprofit trend to consider is the focus on donor retention. We will see a more disciplined approach to donor retention in difficult economic times. Finding and developing relationships with new donors takes time and effort. With a murky outlook for the upcoming economy, nonprofits must create a strategic approach to donor retention and hold onto their established donors. Nonprofits will focus more on planning, tracking,, and implementing campaigns to ensure successful rates. Remember to create a baseline by utilizing the donor retention calculator

The 2023 nonprofit trend to diversify revenue

We work for nonprofits. We’re not economists. We’re not sure what the 2023 economy will hold. However, the economic predictions for 2023 look gloomy. This is why nonprofits need to diversify their revenue streams. Nonprofit organizations can no longer rely upon one funding source. The donors you counted on may provide a smaller gift than you always received. The federal grants you applied for might not go through. The event you host may have fewer attendees.

Organizations should not put all their eggs in one basket. Think of multiple ways to keep your nonprofit in the financial green. Get creative and begin to diversify your revenue this new year.

 SMS communication

Did you get my text? You probably did. Text messages have an average open rate of 98%. That’s huge compared to the average email open rate, which is about 21%. More nonprofits will implement SMS communication in their fundraising efforts. Organizations can use SMS to create fundraising campaigns. But it also creates an opportunity for general communication with their audience, volunteer, and donors. You can send a quick “thank you” text to the volunteers at your event. Or, send out pictures to the donor list. The options are endless for this 2023 nonprofit trend.

Last-Minute Gifts for Nonprofit Pros

Did the holidays creep up on you (again) this year? It seems like Giving Tuesday and the kickoff to the year-end giving season just happened yesterday, and now December is more than halfway over. Maybe you’re struggling with shopping for last-minute gifts or even providing others with gift ideas for yourself.

For the nonprofit professionals out there, we wanted to provide a handy gift guide and give you some suggestions. Last-minute shopping is sometimes inevitable, but here’s to eliminating the stress!

Gifts that Give Back

Give a gift that you can feel good about buying! For those who have a sweet tooth, Doughp is a company that creates cookie dough desserts that are 100% safe to consume when raw. You can use the dough to bake cookies, or just dig in and eat it raw! Plus, they donate 1% of sales to SHE RECOVERS Foundation, which helps support women who are seeking recovery from substance use disorders, other behavioral health issues, and life challenges.

Another gift that donates proceeds to charity is the Lush Charity Pot body lotion. The lotion, which is described to smell like warm woods and powdery florals, raises money for small grassroots organizations working in the areas of human rights, animal protection, and environmental justice.

If your nonprofit pro friend works at a rescue mission, look no further than Sackcloth and Ashes. These blankets are adorable, I promise you’ll want one for every room in your house. For every blanket purchased, they donate a blanket to YOUR local homeless shelter. They’re shipped in a box with instructions on how the recipient can fill it with canned goods and support the shelter too.

For the book lovers in your life, get them a t-shirt or apparel from Out of Print. Out of Print has a wide variety of t-shirts, socks, totes, and more that feature book-related designs. The company makes an effort to give back, and has donated over 5 million books to communities in need and supports a variety of literacy initiatives.

The Gift for Those Who Can’t Sit Still

Do you have a coworker that can’t seem to sit still in meetings? Or a friend that seems a little extra stressed out? Try getting them a jar of Therapy Dough! Similar to Silly Putty or Play Dough, this squishy jar of dough will help people destress and receive the benefits of aromatherapy. The dough comes in multiple scents, such as lavender, orange, eucalyptus, and pine. Plus, with a purchase you make on Uncommon Good’s website, they will donate $1 to one of their nonprofit partners.

Something for the Tea and Coffee Drinkers

Do you know someone who seems to always be reheating their cup of coffee or tea? This coffee warmer is small enough to put on your desk and will keep your drink at an optimal temperature. With a 4.5 out of 5 star rating, the heater features a compact and waterproof design to keep your drink toasty for the duration of your office day!

Subscriptions make for thoughtful gifts because they last throughout the year. A monthly coffee subscription service—such as Atlas or Trade Coffee—can help fuel your nonprofit colleague for all of 2022. Who doesn’t want a steady supply of coffee on hand?

Fun Office Supplies

Don’t just stick to boring black or navy blue ballpoint pens. Spice up the office supplies with items from the Mr. Pen Store. Mr. Pen has everything from fun-shaped puzzle erasers (you can take them apart and put them together again) to highlighters in assorted colors. Office supplies don’t have to be boring!

An Uncommonly Good Gift Card

Grateful is the ultimate nonprofit gift card. Grateful Card™ recipients can pick from all U.S. 501(c)(3) charities to donate the dollars to.

The Ultimate Snacking Set Up

We all have a friend who is always snacking. Give them the gift to snack in style! This bowl features a “double dipping” setup. It has a small detachable bowl that is perfect for chips and salsa, cookies and milk, or any other snacking combo. With multiple cute designs, this is a unique gift for the foodies in your life!

For Remote Nonprofit Workers

Remote employees may like to take their computers to coffee shops or libraries for a change of scenery from a home office. For the times they forget their laptop charger or are someplace without easy access to an outlet, a portable charger is a perfect solution. A portable battery that can charge a computer or phone is a great gift idea for a remote worker.

A Useful Tool for Digital Nonprofit Conferencing

As we prepare for 2022, it’s clear that virtual or hybrid event formats are still here to stay. A lighting device from Lume Cube is a great tool to help with your next virtual nonprofit conference, weekly webinar, or Zoom meeting with a remote team. Portable lights like Lume help boost the quality of your video messaging and make for a thoughtful holiday gift. Lume also offers a variety of gifts for every use and budget.

A Smart Notebook to Optimize Workflow

For the avid note-takers and to-do list fanatics in your life, consider leveling up your notebook gifting game. Rocketbook creates smart notebooks that combine a traditional pen and paper feel with digital technology. These notebooks can connect to cloud software or email so you can stay organized. And because these notebooks are reusable, a gift like this is an environmentally friendly option. With the busyness that comes with working in the nonprofit sector, a smart notebook that optimizes workflow is sure to be a hit with any nonprofit professional.

Technology to Improve Board Communication

Want to get your board of directors more involved with your mission and programs? Make communications easier in 2022 with Easyboard. This innovative board software helps keep your board meetings organized. From scheduling meetings to posting updates to attaching agendas, Easyboard allows you to handle everything board-related in one place. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Branded Tumblers to Boost Your Energy and Your Cause

Tumblers are a classic holiday gift, and branded tumblers provide a unique personalized touch. Consider giving a branded tumbler from your favorite cause to those within your network. Maybe your organization even has its own tumblers!

Educational Opportunities to Inspire Growth

An investment in education is always a good idea! Whether it’s for a colleague or for yourself, consider gifting a course sign-up or nonprofit membership subscription. These kinds of resources provide value while helping you invest in yourself and your cause. Bonus: treat your team to a team pass for Cause Camp, the must-attend nonprofit conference.

Maybe you finally prioritized running those errands that have been on your to-do list for way too long. But then, your phone dings. It’s an email from work, and suddenly, your mind is racing about the busy week ahead. You try to relax and push yourself to stay in the moment. You want to enjoy the rest of your weekend. But you can’t – the Sunday scaries hit.

What are Sunday scaries?

If you are unfamiliar with the term, the Sunday scaries refers to the looming feeling you get on a Sunday about the work week ahead of you. It hangs over you like a looming rain cloud. You can’t seem to stop thinking about your responsibilities. Feelings of anxiety and fear begin to take over. You are already worried about the unknowns that Monday morning may or may not bring.

Nonprofit Workers still get Sunday scaries

No matter what sector you are in, Sunday scaries still affect you – especially if you work for a nonprofit. Unique stressors come with many nonprofit positions. Some nonprofits serve individuals in traumatic, complex, or heart-wrenching situations. Employees might work in crisis centers, soup kitchens, or animal shelters. Therefore, individuals may be exposed to tense scenarios and distressful narratives. When you are in a position that provides assistance to individuals or groups in need, there is inherent pressure to perform well. Nonprofit workers may feel an anxiety around potentially letting others down due to stress surrounding the nonprofit’s mission to do good and help others. There can be a lot of heavy weight that comes with the job.

You might think, “If my work is rewarding and you love helping others, how can I prevent myself from feeling this way?” Well, let’s take a closer look.

5 Ways to Battle the Scaries

Instead of constantly fighting your work anxiety, we may find ways to reduce stress. Now, let’s walk through a few small ways to beat the Sunday scaries.

  1. Find the root of your anxiety. Think about what exactly is causing you to feel worried during the weekend. Did you not complete your work on Friday? Is there an issue with a coworker? Is there a conflict in your personal life? If  you identify the actual cause of your Sunday scaries, you can work to address those negative feelings.
  2. Prepare on Thursday and Friday. Try wrapping up your work weeks strong. While it may be unrealistic to finish all your to-dos week after week, be sure you complete the big tasks. By tying up those loose ends, you won’t be thinking about them come Sunday night.
  3. Set clear work boundaries. If your work emails continue into the weekend, try turning off notifications for the weekend. Change your Slack notifications to “snooze.” And, if possible, politely ask your coworkers to refrain from reaching out unless an urgent matter occurs. Setting clear boundaries will allow you to create a healthier work relationship.
  4. Fill your weekends with wholesome fun! What brings you peace? What can you do to relax and recharge? If you have a busy schedule, try penciling in one activity per weekend that you enjoy. Maybe it’s something as simple as cooking a healthy meal with your family or sitting in the park and reading a new book. Make sure to prioritize taking time for yourself so you can recharge during the weekend.
  5. Have a Monday morning routine that you enjoy. If you learn to make the most out of your Mondays, then the Sunday scaries may not be quite as daunting. This may look different for different people. Perhaps you avoid scheduling meetings for first thing in the morning, treat yourself to your favorite Starbucks drink, or wake up a little earlier to make breakfast and start your week on a positive, healthy note.

All in all, know that you are not alone in your feeling of work anxiety. Nonprofit workers are a community, and we have a special understanding what others within the sector experience. We all are faced with our own personal challenges inside and outside of work.
